Shogun Castle: A Remodeled Apartment House

Unveiling the Beauty of Japanese Renovation

Inspired by the city's transition and ongoing redevelopment projects, Yoshiaki Sugi, in collaboration with Oldgear, has transformed an apartment house into a modern castle. With its unique features and attention to detail, Shogun Castle showcases the beauty of Japanese design and offers a one-of-a-kind living experience.

In order to create an infinite depth and story within the Japanese-style room, Sugi enlisted the help of four painters who had previously worked on the reproduction of national treasure picture scrolls. These talented artists painted original drawings on the walls and ceiling, bringing the room to life. Each unique artwork was signed and sealed by the artists, adding a touch of authenticity and craftsmanship to the space.

The materials used in the realization of Shogun Castle reflect the designer's commitment to traditional Japanese craftsmanship. From wallpaper and diatomaceous earth to Japanese mats and tatami, every element was carefully chosen to enhance the overall aesthetic. The use of hemp paper, natural mineral pigments, and gold leaf further adds to the unique subtlety and elegance of the design.

One of the challenges faced during the project was the limited space of the Japanese-style room. However, Sugi turned this constraint into an opportunity for rethinking the traditional concept of Japanese rooms. By juxtaposing the simplicity of the Japanese-style room with the more elaborate living spaces, the designer created a harmonious contrast that enhances the overall appeal of the castle.

The project, which started in May 2019 and concluded in September 2019, is located in Fukuoka, Japan. With the Tokyo Olympics approaching, Sugi aimed to showcase the beauty of Japanese renovation to the world and leave a lasting legacy for future generations to appreciate.

Shogun Castle has been recognized for its exceptional design and innovation, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2021. This prestigious accolade is awarded to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements while integrating industry best practices and technical characteristics. The castle's well-designed and practical features contribute to a better world, providing fulfillment and positive experiences for its inhabitants.

With its captivating design and attention to detail, Shogun Castle stands as a testament to the beauty and craftsmanship of Japanese architecture. It offers a unique living experience that combines tradition with modernity, inviting residents and visitors alike to immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of Japan.
